Moss Removed at the Root.

This asphalt shingle roof had heavy moss growth and significant dark staining, especially in areas shaded by nearby trees. We used a professional soft wash treatment to kill the moss at the root and safely restore the appearance of the shingles.

What was happening

Moss doesn't just sit on top of a roof — it roots into the texture of the shingle, holding moisture against the surface long after the rest of the roof has dried. Over time that trapped moisture lifts shingle edges and works its way underneath, which is how a moss problem eventually turns into a leak. Shaded slopes and roof edges near overhanging branches, like the ones on this roof, are always the first places it establishes.

Our approach

This was a soft wash treatment, not a high pressure power washing or aggressive scraping job. We lightly brushed away the larger pieces of moss, then applied our soft washing solution to treat the remaining growth at the root. Once treated, the moss can naturally release from the shingles without using high pressure that can strip away shingle granules.

Soft washing is the method most shingle manufacturers recommend for cleaning asphalt shingles, and it is the only method we use on roofs. Our approach is designed to effectively treat the source of the growth while minimizing unnecessary wear and protecting the integrity of the roofing material.
